The CLASSROOM THINKTANK initiative was founded in 2014 by Leonard Sommer, Chief Creative Officer of the German communication and boutique ad agency SOMMER+SOMMER, in partnership with the Berlin School of Creative Leadership. Assuming the whole education system will need to make a radical transition in many countries around the world, Sommer started the non-profit research initiative to help inspire the development of an innovative model for 21st century education. Leonard Sommer has been an advisory board member of the German educational association Education Y since 2016. To combat educational inequality, Education Y has developed the first successful large-scale platform that allows German schools to put children in charge of their own learning and help them develop key social and emotional skills. Realizing the limited influence of schools alone on educational success, the „BuddY“ project takes a peer-based approach to the wider educational ecosystem, including teachers, parents and employers. Education Y works with eight of Germany’s 16 federal states and is mainly funded by foundation grants.
